People on beach

Your friends and family back home are expecting your Instagram feed to be filled with shots sunsets, white, sandy beaches, and emerald green water, #NoFilterNeeded, so surprise them and add some variety to their scrolling by venturing off the beaten path and into Fort Walton Beach for an “Old Florida Feel”.

Do you want to try your hand at fishing, but aren’t ready to commit to a charter boat excursion? The Okaloosa Island Fishing Pier has everything your need for a morning or afternoon of fishing- including the perfect backdrop for a selfie. The pier sells bait, tackle, rods, and reels (you can rent these as well) and extends more than 1200 feet into the gulf so you have plenty of room to land a #fishon. If fishing is not on your agenda, then take a stroll down the pier for the perfect sunset selfie.

If you’re looking to add some variety to your social feeds, take a stroll throughout Downtown Fort Walton beach to add a funky, slightly urban feel to your page or story. Close to the Santa Rosa Sound, you can find surf shops, tattoo parlors, and locally owned restaurants and pubs Be sure to keep an eye for the monthly art walk, which features some of the area’s talented local artists and artisans and live music. Be sure to pop around to the Buccaneer Gift Shop and snap a selfie with the fifteen foot tall Coca-Cola bottle.  Close by, The Landing is a tranquil oasis in the middle of downtown. During the year, you’ll find special events like concerts, movies, and a farmer’s market so you can #buylocal.

What could be cooler than an aquarium located right on the beach? Dedicated to educating and entertaining, The Gulfarium Marine Adventure Park can give you a fun, and, if you sit in the splash zone, wet photo for your feed. You’ll have plenty of opportunities to get up close and personal with local marine life and the daily dolphin and sea lion shows will have you oohing and aahing like a kid again. You can book some one on one time with reptiles, dolphins, penguins, and seals, ensuring that your friends back home will have major #FOMO.

Celebrate #ThrowBackThursday at the country’s oldest surviving Goofy Golf.  Since 1953, families have been playing mini golf on their two courses and taking a picture with “Hammy”, their 23 foot tall T- Rex. Goofy Golf is so old school it’s cash only, and Roadside America rates it worth a detour!

Just northeast of Eglin Airforce Base is the Airforce Armament Museum, home to the only museum dedicated to the history of Airforce armament. Visitors can view planes used in all major combat, from World War Two to present day, including the fastest plane ever built. Visitors can explore the grounds of the museum and snap pictures with many of the planes and weapons including the #MOAB, Mother of All Bombs. Who says you can’t fit a little  learning into your vacation. It’s called #Balance.

When you need a little break from the beach, be sure to explore all the Fort Walton has to offer, it’ll make your feed, and your vacation, more interesting.
